Despite being born with an incurable disorder called Cerebral Palsy, this man is thanking God for giving him a life—no matter how difficult that life might seem to people with no physical ailment. In fact, year-old Roger Flournoy from Austin, Texas even considers his impairment a “gift” from God. The damage is caused by brain injury or abnormal brain development. It affects body movement and muscle control among other bodily functions. When his caretakers take him outdoors, the video shows him smiling on his wheelchair, as if everything is right with the world. Flournoy says going to church every Sunday relieves him of his loneliness. In the church, he says he finds joy in seeing the faces of fellow worshippers. Flournoy says he believes that his physical impairment doesn’t make him a lesser creature of God. Flournoy says he believes God has a purpose in giving him Cerebral Palsy, and he is fulfilling that purpose. He says God gave him the “gift” so that he can “encourage” people to have more faith in Him.
Advice on possibly dating someone with cerebral palsy
Last year was my first year teaching and I had the privilege of teaching the Adapted PE class. One of my students was a 5th grade girl with cerebral palsy. She actually attended regular PE classes with her homeroom class. She was quite active! She was pretty much non-verbal but always came to class with a smile on her face and ready and willing to try anything.
She was able to walk but had some balance and coordination issues.
By Andrew Gurza It’s rare for me to go. I’m more of a Cinderfella, likely to sit at home and binge on Netflix, only wishing for a chance to hobnob with hotties. I wasn’t going to let the chance pass. I knew one thing: I had to play the part of the hypermasculine “dudebro. Flat-brimmed snapback baseball cap, perfectly tilted to the left side. Plain white tank top that highlighted my well-built arms, highlighting two distinctive tattoos on each bicep.

Late Spring, The last few weeks of my sophomore year at South Miami were anticlimactic, to say the least, especially after the Spring Concert series in April. From April 17, till the middle of June, I simply soldiered on along with my fellow underclassmen and watched as the members of the Class of as they prepared for Senior Week, finals and, finally, graduation. The end of that first academic year in Cobra Country was an awkward period for me.
But, to use an old expression, time heals all wounds, and I no longer felt like a stranger in a strange land. I loved both of those electives; I enjoyed writing all kinds of reviews for the Entertainment Section, and I was bowled over when Ms.

D Cerebral palsy CP is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. Signs and symptoms vary among people. Often, symptoms include poor coordination, stiff muscles , weak muscles, and tremors. There may be problems with sensation , vision , hearing , swallowing , and speaking. Often babies with cerebral palsy do not roll over, sit, crawl, or walk as early as other children of their age. Difficulty with the ability to think or reason and seizures each occurs in about one third of people with CP.
While the symptoms may get more noticeable over the first few years of life, the underlying problems do not worsen over time. Often the cause is unknown. Risk factors include preterm birth , being a twin , certain infections during pregnancy such as toxoplasmosis or rubella , exposure to methylmercury during pregnancy, a difficult delivery, and head trauma during the first few years of life, among others.
The Awareness of Birds
In my friendship and courtship with my partner, Billy, over the past decade, I learned love has no limits. Love has no boundaries when people have the ability to make their own decisions on how to live their lives and what they want out of it. Like any other person would. My visit to Rhode Island a few weeks ago rekindled a relationship years in the making. It initially faltered due to pressure from society as well as pressure from outsiders looking in. Some people looked down at Billy as a person with many limitations, because of his cerebral palsy.
Last week I wrote a column directed to husbands with wives who have cerebral palsy. This week I want to switch the roles and address wives with husbands who have cerebral palsy. Even though I’m not a man, I have dated men with cerebral palsy and other disabilities.
I was in a relationship from the middle of my first year of high school to the middle of what should have been my senior year, but was actually my first year of college I graduated high school a year early. Because of health issues throughout high school, I went to a home-bound like school, while my boyfriend at the time went to a regular public school. I tried to join him and my other classmates in 10th grade, but that idea lasted less than a semester because managing my health and keeping up with the demands of education in such a big school seemed next to impossible.
But the Universe blessed us both with the same fabulous physical therapist. After our physical therapist knew me a few months, I guess he thought I was special enough to meet the young man who he had been working with since he was 3. I have always said health care providers become your first set of best friends and lead you to your other set, because I have been around them more in my 21 years than regular friends. The week before Thanksgiving of my freshman year of high school, our physical therapist gave me the email of this young man.
I believe his hope was that the young man and I would become friends because we have things in common that most would never understand. The young man and I have a similar type of cerebral palsy a muscle and movement disability caused by brain damage and often joke that we are the same person in many ways. After a few emails, many text messages, hours-long phone and video calls, a movie and a holiday break the young man and I announced that we were in a relationship. The relationship lasted two-and-a-half years.
The young man and I parted ways for two more years, obviously heartbroken, but we were at different places in life. Our time apart helped us understand that we may not work out as boyfriend and girlfriend, but we still need each other because of the connection and understanding no one else can comprehend.

I guess that makes me a millennial yikes! I do want to talk about dating with disabilities though, because I believe that this topic is super important. Discussing dating with disabilities is important, because often society views the disabled population as inferior and almost non-existent. This absurd idea is completely false. As someone with cerebral palsy myself, I think I hopefully can try to tackle this subject with some first hand experience!
Aug 17, · Dating a man with cerebral palsy? Advice? Ok, so I’m 20 and a few months back I met a guy cerebral palsy. At the time I was in a relationship with someone else and it didn’t work : Resolved.
I was new to dating after my year-old marriage ended, and I very much wanted to be open to new experience. Despite having absolutely no knowledge or even interest in birds or birding or bird photography, I found his photos mesmerizing. His passion for birds seemed as vast as the patience it took to really capture them through photography, and I only became aware of that patience when I went out walking with him in an Orange County park last year, one of many that dot the otherwise drab, cookie-cutter landscape.
Within moments my friend pointed out a startlingly blue bird on a branch in a nondescript tree ahead of us and a small brown bird at the base of the trunk. He looked up and scanned the sky. We walked over and sat on a curb at the edge of the park and faced a dirt gulley that ran along the road. Across the street, blending into the brown dirt were three small owls, about eight inches high, staring at us, swiveling their heads, looking up into the sky and then darting down into a hole.
I might as well have been dropping down into a hole, a proverbial Alice, into a world that I had absolutely no awareness of but that had existed, evidently, always. This is a post about awareness. As a writer who happens to also be the mother of a young adult with severe disabilities, including refractory epilepsy and cerebral palsy, I struggle daily with issues of identity. The people on the conference call laughed at this corroboration of my inclination toward anger and irritability at worst and dark humor at best.
My daughter is non-verbal and thus often invisible, even to members of my own family and close friends.
