I have seen four A stamps on Natural finished bodies, and a trans-red with an A stamp. I’ve seen a C on a Monaco Yellow and a Sunburst. I have also seen a D, along with an A on a Sunburst body. This is just a theory, but if only A’s were put on Natural finished guitars as an example, it could help determine if a guitar is refinished. The number will have an ‘S’ prefix possibly an ‘E’, read below followed by a six digit number. The first digit is supposed to reflect the year of manufacture, but there are major overlaps in this regard, and the serial number should not be used to ID a guitar’s exact year of manufacture. The last five digits are basically random. An important thing to look for are the matching serial number stickers in the neck pocket and on the pickguard. All bodies are Ash, and usually a heavy piece. Most Natural and Sunburts finished guitars seem to be three-piece bodies, painted ones may be more.

I would have called it a Custom 22S or something. I like the blade so much more than the rotary. A few clear coat indents or scratches but nothing through to the wood. It plays easily with low action and with the Fralin pickup it has a sweeter selection of single coil tones.

I’m hoping to find the earliest serial number possible of a Martin featuring these Kluson tuners with the ultra thin pancake-like riveted cog wheels. The reason for this is to learn if the tuners were marketed before April They were patented in but the application for this was filed on April 10, Around that time the tuners should have shown up at the market and shipped out to the manufacturers.
The same question is for patent law experts, if this was possible or legal at all in or had the application to be filed before the product was marketed? Unfortunately there are no Kluson records left over or known from this period which would give a more precise answer. So I’d be happy for any input as this could mean a rather important info concerning the research of wartime productions.
The earliest date we have insofar is Bruce’s made in August that year serial? Any earlier guitar out there? This is a drawing taken from the original file applied for patent on April 10, for John E Kluson. I will add a picture of the tuners later.

After his return from the Army in , and modifications to his own, he would be seen in several more movies made for Paramount and promotional shots for others with one identical to the earlier films.
In King Creole, the finish on the J used appears slightly dull as if oversprayed and by though, the Paramount guitar had a heavy overspray on the body and neck that was likely applied to facilitate filming by reducing hotspots and minimizing glare.

At Duesenberg our production techniques allow us to meet the exact tolerances and meet the uniformity that ensures that you will be hearing the very best in tone.
